Now I can't run any version of SoftLeds. I installed and then uninstalled the latest version, then reinstalled the original 1.6 version. And upon launch, it complains about "VB.UserControl" not found, which prevents it from loading.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled all the versions I have, but I can't get it to work at all.

Never mind. I removed every last trace I could, using Total Uninstall, then removed invalid registry references, and did a final reinstall. It seems to work now.

Hmmm, everything else seems to work better now as well. Maybe some or all of my previous problems with 1.6 were due to having upgraded and reverted several times. In fact, that's probably true, since (in my experience, at least) the proprietary DLLs and OCXs that SoftLeds installs get left behind.

Update: I take that back. Still have problems. Now, my Z: drive still isn't appearing when mounted. The X: and Y: drives do appear when mounted.
However--the Z: drive does show up when I mount the Y: drive. I don't know why. So here is what happens:
--X:, Y:, and Z: not mounted--
Mount Z: - nothing happens to the OSD
Mount X: - X: correctly appears in the OSD
Mount Y: - Y: and Z: correctly appear in the OSD

The aforementioned problem still occurs, but I've found that only the OSD is misbehaving for me; the tray works fine. So it seems the two aren't talking correctly.
However as I said in another post, using the tray icons causes Explorer.exe to devour 50%+ CPU time on my system, with only moderate volume usage. That doesn't happen with the OSD.

nameless,
I have re-checked my code like a zillion times and I just can't figure out what the problem could be.
Have you tried changing the ZOOM/Transparency for the OSD when the Z: drive is not showing? Perhaps doing so will refresh the display and reveal the drive????

I hadn't tried that before, but on your advice, I just did.
What seems to happen when I resize the OSD is that the Z: drive "wants" to appear, but doesn't. That is, there seems to be a "spot" for the Z: drive in the OSD, as evidenced by the fact that the "spot" for it flashes onscreen when the OSD is resized--just to the right of my I: drive. However, the actually Z: drive does not appear.
Because it's awfully hard to explain what I'm talking about, I made a little AVI video of it:

Well, there must be a problem in there somewhere. The 1.6.001 beta didn't work perfectly for me (the volumes were always shown in the OSD, even when they didn't exist on the system), but at least all of the volumes would appear. Sorry. ???

Ugh! I'm back to not being able to even run SoftLeds (any version). I have the same problem I created this thread to report (upon launch, it complains about "VB.UserControl" not found, which prevents it from loading). Uninstalling, reinstalling, trying to clean the registry--nothing is working. Weird and aggravating.
I'm using O&O DriveLED for the time being. That utility doesn't refresh volumes dynamically (by design), but it does display all of them if I close and relaunch it.
I miss SoftLeds... :(

???
Well, I don't get it. I've screwed around quite a bit, and I still can't get any version of SoftLeds 1.6 to run. I keep getting the "VB.UserControl" error. Uninstalling and reinstalling does no good.
The strange thing is that if I install SoftLeds 1.5, it will run fine.
Help?
Dear nameless,
Please re-download SoftLeds 1.6
Make sure the downloaded file is exactly 1,028,579 bytes
Re-install it and let me know if this fixes the problem.
NOTE: Try to close as many applications as possible during the installation process... especially any antivirus software that you may be running.

Thanks. This version will run for me (i.e. no more "VB.UserControl" error!), but Z: still won't show up in the OSD. (Well, it did appear in the OSD, until I configured SL to show X: and Y:, after which point it stopped showing Z: in the OSD.) And as before, the tray works fine for all volumes.
The strange thing is that I can see in the OSD that there is a "space" for the Z: volume (I can see it when the OSD flickers), but the actual LEDs and the "Z:" drive letter do not appear there. So, SoftLeds is creating the "spot" for Z:, but it's not putting the drive letter label and the LEDs there.
Sorry to continually report bad news.
aaahhh... that's interesting!
So... the OSD is really rendering the Z drive! the problem is that you can't see it.
Would it be possible that you post a screenshot showing the OSD? Please, make sure the "extra space" created for the Z: drive is clearly visible.

Quite awhile ago, I posted a video showing what I was talking about, in one of these threads (maybe this thread; I'm too lazy to check). Below is the link to that video, again, and also a screen shot taken from the video:
http://snurl.com/resize

You can clearly see the spot where Z: is accounted for, but doesn't appear correctly.
I can also see that the drive letters appear miss-aligned. They should appear EXACTLY in the middle of the area designated for each drive.
Perhaps this is part of the problem.
Or perhaps the problem is the number of drive letters!
Have you tried removing a couple of icons to see if the OSD then displays the last one “Z”?
nameless

Yeah, I've tried removing some other drive letters. Just yesterday, I tried removing all other drives, and also just having C: and Z: in the OSD. It didn't work.
What font type, size and color are you using for the drive letters?

Figured you'd ask. :) I'm using Lucinda Console, 8 point, non-italic, non-bold. I've tried a whole bunch of other font combinations, and nothing works.
I don't remember if I ever asked you this:
Are you perhaps using a custom DPI setting for the font sizes under Windows?
nameless
Aug 4 2003, 11:58 PM
I am running 120 DPI. I dismissed that as the problem, since some earlier builds of SoftLeds 1.6 were able to display all of my volumes just fine.

Maybe this will help. Here is what I just did, which I hope will illustrate and help nail down the problem:
1) With SoftLeds 1.6 closed, went to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\softleds\Preferences key, and deleted the "Drives" value.
2) With only Z: mounted (but not X: or Y:), launched SoftLeds, and configured it to show Z: in the OSD. It worked fine at this point:

3) Mounted the X: BestCrypt volume, and configured SoftLeds to display it in the OSD, along with Z:. This also worked fine:

4) Dismounted the X: BestCrypt volume, but didn't touch anything at all in SoftLeds' configuration, and didn't dismount the Z: volume. As soon as X: was dismounted, SoftLeds removed both X: and Z: from the OSD, and at this point, I was back to the problem with not being able to have Z: displayed no matter what (short of carrying out the steps above all over again):

5) If at that point I close SoftLeds, go back to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\softleds\Preferences key, and edit the "Drives" value to remove just this portion of the string:
|\\refrigerator>X>0
...then the Z: drive will be displayed in the OSD again--until I mount and dismount X: again.
