ROR
DHTML Menu Builder and UNICODE
Updated 14/Dec/2004

 Experience Required: Beginner

It's no secret that DHTML Menu Builder has some serious issues supporting languages that require extended ASCII characters such as Chinese, Japanese, Arab, Hebrew, Russian, etc... This is beause its interface does not properly support UNICODE which makes it quite dificult to develop menus in such languages.

Until now, we had provided several alternatives to allow the development of such menus and although these workarounds have work for most users they tend to require quite a lot of extra work.

Version 5.0, the upcoming major release of DHTML Menu Builder, will provide native support for UNICODE but, for now, we'll have to continue to provide workarounds.
This time we're going to offer a tool that works transparently and on the background allowing DHTML Menu Builder to receive direct input of extended characters. This tool will change the default Caption textbox in DHTML Menu Builder for one that allows direct input of any kind of characters, including standard ASCII and extended ASCII (also known as DBCS).

Here's how the tool works:

  • First of all you will need to download it:

Note that the tool requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Click the link below to download it in case you don't have it:

  • You can save the tool anywhere on your computer. Make sure you save it someplace where is easy to access.
  • Now, run the tool by double clicking it.
Nothing will happen, aparently... the tool is now hidden waiting for DHTML Menu Builder to show up.
  • Run DHTML Menu Builder
You will notice that DHTML Menu Builder's Caption textbox now appears with a light pink background (see the screenshots below). That's the tool in action!
  • Use the new textbox as you would nornally use the standard one. It works exactly the same with the difference that it properly supports extended ASCII characters.
